In order to also be able to carry out a treatment of the workpieces with the rotary hearth in greatly varying furnace atmospheres without at the same time having to operate the complicated construction of pusher furnace installations, provision is made for the rotary drive 13 to be designed so as to work cyclically for a defined delivery stroke h corresponding to an integral fraction of the circumference of the rotary hearth 4, for it to be possible for the interior space of the rotary hearth to be subdivided into several treatment zones, partitioned off from one another, of greatly varying temperature and/or composition of the furnace atmosphere, namely into a heating zone 17, a cooling zone 18 and a diffusion annealing zone 19, by several liftable and lowerable bulkheads 9 to 12 which can be driven simultaneously, the circumferential distance between the bulkheads 9 to 12 corresponding to an integral multiple of a delivery stroke h, and for one bulkhead 9, 12 each to be arranged directly behind the furnace flap 7 in the circumferential direction on both sides of it 7 at the mutual distance apart of a delivery stroke h for creating a lock-like charging and removal zone 16, which can likewise be heated on its own.
