A method of arc welding metals in gaseous atmosphere.

A shielding gas for gas metal arc welding, including short arc welding, spray arc welding and pulsed arc welding, in the first instance in stainless steel, both in steels which are sensitive and in steels which are not sensitive to carburization. The shielding gas comprises Ar, He and O2, the concentration of O2 being in the range of 0.5-1.5 per cent, the concentration of He being in the range of 25-40 per cent and the remainder consisting of Ar.
