Pressure jaws or shells for a device for the mechanical splitting of rock, having a cylinder (1), in which a hydraulically actuatable piston having a piston rod (3) is arranged so as to be longitudinally movable, by means of which piston rod a sliding wedge (18) arranged between the pressure jaws (17) can be displaced, the pressure jaws (17), which can be inserted into boreholes, being supported in the cylinder block or in a cylinder lower part (2), which is arranged releasably on the latter, so as to be exchangeable and movable laterally to a limited extend and at the respective sides facing the sliding wedge (18), having an obliquity which corresponds to the inclination of the sliding wedge (18), characterized in that the pressure jaws (17) are of approximately spade-or hammer-shaped design.
