Means and process for applying a thin plastic film onto a piezoelectric oscillating quartz crystal by means of a polymer insoluble in an aqueous medium are described. Coating is effected either from an organic solution or with the aid of a vinyl monomer plasma. Owing to the polymer coating, antibodies or biomolecules can be bound either adsorptively or covalently. These immobilised biomolecules can then bind antigens or ligands; the resulting increase in mass of the oscillating quartz crystal can be measured quantitatively in the ng range on the basis of the change in oscillation frequency. Immunoassays and the determination of ligands for affinity chromatography are thus made possible.
