In a method and a device for testing the noise development of safety belt retractors of motor vehicles as a function of the road condition and of the vehicle speed, the safety belt rectractors are loaded with a vibration spectrum which consists of vibrations varying in time with respect to frequency and amplitude and thus corresponds to a simulated road condition and simulated vehicle speed. By this means in enabled an objective statement about the expected noise behaviour of safety belt retractors with only a comparatively small technical expenditure, and even before these are built into the vehicle. In this way, a constant quality of the safety belt retractors with respect to their noise behaviour may be ensured. Furthermore, exact quality specifications may hereby be made available to the manufacturer of these objects.
