The proposal is for a method for the production of a reciprocating component of an internal combustion engine subjected to combustion heat with a thin, metal-ceramic heat shield. In this method the heat shield (1) is, before casting on the component body, placed face downwards on a recess (12) provided in the casting mould (10,11), with sealing contact all the way round at the edges only, then curved slightly into the recess (12) by the action of a force and, in the process, prestressed, and held in this curved shape by an applied suction force. The component body is then cast onto the heat shield (1), the curvature of the heat shield being maintained by the suction force until the material of the component body solidifies. This curvature is maintained during the use of the component, even at the operating temperature, and is preferably just great enough to ensure that the internal stresses in the heat shield caused by the temperature gradient between the front side (2) of the heat shield, subjected to combustion heat, and the cooler rear side (3) of the heat shield and the resulting differences in expansion can be largely relieved. Protection also extends to the apparatus for carrying out the method and to the component produced in this way. IMAGE
