A description is given of an electrically operated appliance for the preparation of hot beverages, such as coffee, tea or the like, in particular a coffee machine. The housing of the appliance has a fresh-water container, from which the water can be supplied to a heater. The heated water then passes to a filter which receives the coffee grounds, it being possible for the filter to be selectively transferred by the user of the appliance into a working and a filling position. Situated underneath the filter is a collecting jug for the finished beverage. The appliance has, furthermore, a deliming display device which is constructed as a mechanically operating deliming counting mechanism and consists of a rotating body, provided with a display mark, and a viewing window. The actuation of the rotating body, constructed as a toothed ring, of the deliming display device is effected by the pivotably mounted filter of the coffee machine. In this arrangement, the filter preferably has a push-piece which, when the filter is transferred, comes into operative connection with one of the teeth of the toothed ring and moves it on in each case by one increment.
