The split plain bearing in particular a big end bearing for medium and large engines comprises half-shells (11, 12) releasably held together by means of retainer devices (16) arranged preferably in pairs to grip directly in the backing of the shells of the plain bearing across their joint faces. Each retainer device is formed by an annular elastically prestressed tension member which embraces the plain bearing and which is accommodated in a circumferential groove (15) formed on the outside of the backing of the parts of the plain bearing. The tension member may be formed by a helical tension spring (16), the ends of which are connected together or by an elastically stretchable plastics wire or plastics tube, the ends of which are welded together.
