A cloning vector contains a DNA sequence which has been derived from a nocardioform microorganism and it is able to express the DNA sequence in a host microorganism. Recombinant cholesterol oxidase is produced by a microbial host cell which has been transformed with a cloning vector which contains cholesterol oxidase- encoding DNA which has been derived from a nocardioform microorganism. A process for determining cholesterol oxidase in a fluid sample obtained from a human includes contacting the sample with the recombinant cholesterol oxidase which has been derived from the nocardioform microorganism.
