Process for producing combustible gases in a melt-down gasifier (1) operated with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, into which prereduced, preferably iron-containing ores (13), coal (4) and slag-forming agents (15) are introduced and from which melt (6), liquid slag (7) and combustible gas (8) are withdrawn. The quantity of coal used to produce combustible gases (8) is variable and in excess of that used in melt reduction. The combustible gas produced is divided into two partial flows (9, 10). A first partial flow (9) of the combustible gas (8) produced is used for the prereduction (2) of the ore (13) to be fed to the melt-down gasifier (1) and the fraction of the gas greater than the quantity of the combustible gas required for prereduction is fed to a desulphuration reactor (3), from which the reaction products of the desulphuration reduction and incompletely reacted slag-forming agents are withdrawn and fed to the melt-down gasifier (1) as slag-forming agents (15).
