A process for the preparation of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-propionic acid phenylhydrazide A process for the preparation of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid phenylhydrazide by reaction of a 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid alkyl ester with phenylhydrazine, characterized in that said alkyl ester is 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (C4-C8-alkyl) ester which is prepared by the reaction of 2,2-bis(hydroxyrnethyl)propionic acid with C4-C8-alkanol in the presence of a catalyst and an aromatic solvent, said aromatic solvent and the unreacted C4-C8-alkanol being recovered by distillation.
