In order to obtain an improved and more flexible method and a heating furnace suitable for carrying out this method, it is proposed that, in a heating furnace whose furnace chamber is constructed for the deposition and stepwise transportation of the products to be heated with a hearth or beam system and a lifting system, the said products to be heated, which in the rest phases during the heating-up are mounted on the hearth or beam system, are moved down by a hearth bogie for transportation, received by the receiving stands of this hearth bogie by a vertical relative movement caused by means of the lifting system and are lifted off from the hearth or beam system, after which the hearth bogie transports said products to be heated by one conveying step and thereafter deposits them on the next free portion of the hearth or beam system by renewed vertical relative movement. For this purpose, the walking-beam system can lift or lower the hearth bogie or hearth bogies with respect to the fixed hearth or beam system of the furnace chamber, or the latter is vertically movable with respect to the hearth bogie or hearth bogies. Also, the receiving stands of the hearth bogie can be liftable and lowerable by means of individually controllable working cylinders arranged on the hearth bogie.
