In a process for releasing the contacts of a sticking relay (14), whose one contact (20) is arranged in a fixed position and whose other contact (22) is arranged on the ferromagnetic relay armature (34), which relay armature is drawn with its contact (22) towards the fixed-position contact (20) by the application of an electrical voltage to the relay coil (46) winding, and which drops again when no current is passing through the relay coil (46) and the relay (14) is intact, as a result of which the two contacts (20, 22) are separated from one another again, sticking together of the relay contacts (20, 22) is detected and, in the event of relay contacts (20, 22) sticking together, an AC voltage or a pulsating DC voltage is applied to the relay coil (46) winding.
