A chemical reactor using gas phase homogeneous catalysis in general, and a catalytic burner in particular. According to the invention the catalytic burner (8) comprises a refractory core (18) through which pass a plurality of channels (18c) elongate in the direction of flow of the mixture to be burned. Means for distributing (70) the mixture to be burned are arranged in order to differentiate different sectional regions of the burner, a relatively cold outer one providing the passage for most, or even all, of the mixture to be burned, and the relatively hot, other one, which is axial, providing the passage for a minor, or even nil, flow of the mixture to be burned.
