NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [R is (substituted) phenyl; (n) is 2-5]. EXAMPLE:Galactosyl-beta-1.6-p-nitrophenyl-alpha-maltopentaoxide. USE:A measurement substrate for the individual determination of the activities of human pancreatogenous and salivary alpha-amylase. PREPARATION:A galactosyl residue-containing saccharide and a malto oligosaccharide derivative of formula II are treated with beta-galactosiase to bond the galactosyl group to the non-reducing terminal glucose residue of the malto oligosaccharide derivative through a beta-1,6-bond.
