PURPOSE:To attain high picture quality by detecting distortion by comparing a reference signal included in a reproduced video signal with an original reference signal, and controlling the filtering characteristic of a digital filter so as to correct the distortion. CONSTITUTION:A digital signal processing part 2 is equipped with the digital filter 4 to which an A/D-converted digital luminance signal is inputted, a control means 5 which controls characteristic such as frequency, phase, and group delay, etc., and a switching circuit 6 for the insertion of the reference signal for distortion detection in the vertical flyback period of the digital luminance signal when recording is performed. The control means 5 detects the distortion by comparing the waveform of the reference signal included in a digitized reproducing video signal with that of the original reference signal inserted at the insertion circuit 6 when reproduction is performed, and controls the coefficient of the digital filter 4 so as to correct the distortion. Thereby, it is possible to correct the distortion in an IC in magnetic recording/reproduction or that due to the dispersion of the characteristic of an analog filter, etc., and to realize high picture quality.
