Substantially pure placental derived endothelial cell growth factor is described. The molecule is characterized by a molecular weight of about 47 kilodaltons, and an N-terminal amino acid sequence which differs from platelet derived endothelial cell growth factor by five amino acids. For instance, the placental derived endothelial cell growth factor can have the amino acids TPGTS added at its N-terminal end in comparison to platelet derived endothelial cell growth factor. The placental derived endothelial cell growth factor can be used to stimulate the proliferation of angiogenesis. Inhibitors to the factor can be used to inhibit certain cancers and to prevent blastocyte implantation.
