Metal strip, partic. of Al, is wound helically on tube, pref. with a non-round cross section, partic. oval steel tube, by rotating the tube and cold forming the strip to match the tube curvature, such that the strip, on edge is under a tension force which increases from the base to the top. Directly before application to the tube, the strip undergoes a rolling process which assists the strip to conform to the tube curvature. A centripetal compression force is applied to the top end of the strip by a pressure roll so that material is displaced towards the base, making available additional material for elongation of the top end of the strip.
