A percussion instrument, in particular a drum, has a body (15) which forms a resonance chamber. The body is open at both ends, and at least one end is covered by a membrane (18) in the form of a skin. The tension in this membrane can be adjusted by a device (11) whilst the drum is being played. The tensioning device consists of a ring (26) attached to a number of tensioning elements (36) which have their other ends attached to the drum body. The drum is mounted on a stand which has a concave surface to support the drum. This concave surface extends over an arc of at least 90 deg. USE/ADVANTAGE - The support facilitates the adjustment of the drumskin tension whilst the drum is being played.
