The brake device for a reverse gearwheel (4) which is rotatably displaceable on a fixed axis (3) uses a brake cone (12) which is fixedly connected to same. Both the reverse gearwheel (4) and the brake cone (12) are mounted rotatable and axially displaceable to a restricted amt. on a sleeve (8) which is axially displaceable but non-rotatable on the axis (3). The sleeve (8) supports a non-rotatable brake cone (14) corresponding to the first brake cone (12). The second brake cone (14) can be axially displaced in the direction of the reverse gearwheel (4) away from a stop ring (9) against the force of a spring (20). The sleeve (8) has on the inside one or more grooves (22) which extend against the shift direction of the reverse gear wheel in an inclined face (23). A ball (24) pressed radially outwards by a compression spring (25) and guided in a bore (27) of the axis (3) engages in each groove (22). The two brake cones are in friction engagement after displacing the reverse gearwheel. ADVANTAGE - Rapid shift of reverse gear is possible even with markedly differing operating conditions and oil qualities.
