A method of determining the orientation of objects on a conveyor involves using optical sensors which produce data representing patterns of edge points arising from successive linear scans of the object. Profile image data for a number of possible object orientations are stored. The max data difference between each pair of possible orientations is determined on the basis of the stored data. Windows are identified from maximal data differences between orientation pairs. Comparable profile image data detected for individual objects are compared with the stored data to identify the windows. If the difference exceeds a defined threshold an orientation non-coincidence is detected.
