-0-SELF-CLOCKING ENCODING/DECODINGFILM INFORMATION EXCHANGE SYSTEMUSING DEDICATED MAGNETIC TRACKS ON FILMABSTRACTA virtually transparent magnetic layer isincluded as an additional layer in a color negativefilm. Information exchange between various users ofthe film--such as (for example) the filmmanufacturer, the camera user, the dealer andphotofinisher--is carried via plural longitudinalmagnetic tracks on the film that begin and end inindividual frames. Each track is dedicated to thewriting and reading of a predetermined set ofparameters related to the corresponding frame. Thephotofinisher-dedicated tracks fill the exposedimage area of each frame. The camera-dedicatedtracks lie along the edges of the film between thefilm perforations, the perforations being widelyspaced for the purpose. All data is recorded on thefilm using a novel self-clocking code which iscompletely self-clocking, in order to provideautomatic data synchronization between the varioususers without requiring that any of them totransport the film at the same speed or even at auniform speed when reading and writing.
