Desulphuriser for pig iron, based on ultrafine magnesium or calcium carbide powders which are agglomerated with a polymeric binder

Desulphurising product consisting of fine magnesium and/or calcium carbide powders agglomerated with the aid of a thermoplastic substance, and process for its manufacture. The process of manufacture consists in mixing, under inert gas, 70 to 98 % by weight of magnesium and/or calcium carbide powder with 2 to 30 % by weight of thermoplastic polymer powder, extruding the mixture thus obtained, still under inert gas, and optionally comminuting the extruded product into granules or flakes. The product applies to the desulphurising of refining pig iron or foundry pig iron.
