The present invention relates to a method and a device for illuminating an impression (4) or a hole, which are formed at the surface of a material. This method is characterised in that the illuminating light is oriented collinearly with the optical axis of a microscope forming the image of the said impression (4) or the said hole in a measurement focal plane. The proposed illumination device can, in particular, be fitted to an optical microscope.
