PURPOSE: To obtain a corresponding pyridine carboxylic acid simply and in excellent yield by electrochemically oxidizing a hydroxymethylpyridine deriv. of a specific structural formula at NiO(OH) anode. ;CONSTITUTION: The hydroxymethylpyridine deriv. having a structural formula expressed by formula I is electrochemically oxidized at the NiO(OH) anode. In formula I, X denotes H, 1-12C alkyl, 6-12C allyl, COOR1, CONH2, CONHR1, CON(R1)2, CN, C(O)R1, SO2R1, SO3H and NO2 and R1 denotes H, 1-12C alkyl and 6-12C allyl. By this method, o-hydroxymethylpyridine deriv. can be selectively oxidized to the corresponding pyridine carboxylic acid deriv. (compound of formula II).
