Aqueous thixotropic detergent composition for an automatic dishwasher, process for its preparation, and method for washing dishes

Aqueous cleaning compositions containing inorganic builder salts and other functional inorganic salts, chlorine bleach and bleach-stable detergent are transformed into thixotropic liquid automatic dishwasher compositions by incorporating from 0.03 to 0.5 weight percent, of stearic acid or other long chain carboxylic acid without inorganic colloid-forming clay or other thixotropic thickener. The compositions are stable against phase separation over a range of temperatures.
