The invention relates to a method for fracture-separation of the cap and rod of engine connecting rods produced using powder swaging technology, in which - the cap or the rod of the engine connecting rod is clamped firmly on a holder which can be moved at right angles to the fracture-separation plane, - the part of the engine connection rod which is not fixed to the holder is held in a fixed position, and - a straight, central shock, acting in the axis of symmetry of the engine connecting rod, is exerted on the holder in the fracture-separation direction. A device for carrying out the method comprises: - a fixed-position device base (1), - a holder (7) for the cap (28) on the engine connecting rod (20), - a holder for the rod of the engine connecting rod, - a guide, fixed on the device base, for each holder, on which the respective holder is supported such that it can move within limits in each case at right angles the fracture-separation plane and parallel to the axis of symmetry of the engine connecting rod, and - an impact mass (3) for each holder, the impact masses exerting at the same time a straight central shock, acting on the respective holder in the axis of symmetry of said engine connecting rod, in the fracture-separation direction of the engine connecting rod.
