An adapter for rewinding or fast-forwarding an 8mm video tape in a video home system (VHS) video tape rewinder comprises a housing (10) having substantially the same dimensions as those of a VHS video tape and the transmission assembly (40) mounted in this housing. Said housing (10) is adapted to be received in the VHS video tape rewinder and has a central recess (16) on an upper side thereof for accommodating the 8mm video tape (50) without the video tape coming in contact with any external object originating outside the 8mm video tape. Said transmission assembly (40) is driveable by the driving rotor wheel (61) of the VHS video tape rewinder and is adapted to drive one of the reels (51) of the 8mm video tape.
