The system for matching a change in torque which otherwise occurs at each ratio change of an automatic gearbox (12) fitted to an IC engine (11) uses an engine torque control unit (10) and a gearbox ratio controller/actuator (7). Sensors are used to establish the instantaneous torque immediately before and after the ratio change. The drive is regulated via an electronic throttle control (8) in relation to set characteristic data (1,3,4) and the various instantaneous engine parameters, e.g. rpm (16,17), accelerator (15), vehicle speed (14) etc.. An optimum equalisation of torque is thereby obtained with shock damping during ratio change. USE/ADVANTAGE - Regulates torque and inertial energy differences arising from gearbox responses and provides effective suppression of shock. Maintains smooth power transmission during and after ratio change.
