The low pressure generator (2) and suction cup (3) are combined in a manually operable unit (1). The two parts can be releasably coupled. The vacuum pressure generator is in the form of a vacuum pump, pref. a membrane or rotary type. The drive for the latter is an electromotor with leads (23,24,25) to a battery pref. of sec. cell type (26). The current is broken by an on-off switch (28) above the gripping part (27) of the handle (6). An adjusting screw (16) varies the pressure of a spring (21) against a ball (22) in a bore (17) providing a valve seat (19). A socket (13) has an inner thread for the adjusting screw which allows the vacuum pressure to be continuously varied.
