PURPOSE:To uniformly alloy platinum with cobalt in the platinum-cobalt alloy catalyst of a phosphoric acid type fuel cell and to enhance the characteristics of the cell. CONSTITUTION:When cobalt hydroxide is deposited on a platinum catalyst obtd. by carrying platinum on a carbon carrier and the platinum is alloyed with cobalt by treatment at a high temp. to produce the platinum-cobalt alloy catalyst of a phosphoric acid type fuel cell, a reactive soln. used at the time of depositing the cobalt hydroxide on the platinum catalyst is adjusted to pH 8.5-10 by adding a dil. alkali soln. The cobalt hydroxide is not segregated and the objective uniformly alloyed platinum-cobalt alloy catalyst is obtd.
