PURPOSE: To provide a new compound useful as a pest repellent and having an excellent repelling effect and its excellent persistence. ;CONSTITUTION: 2-(1-Hydroxyisopropyl)-5-methylcyclopentanone of the formula. The compound is obtained by oxidizing 2-(1-hydroxyisopropyl)-5- methylcyclopentanol with the salt of a metal such as chromium, manganese or silver or with an organic oxidizing agent (e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide). The compound of the formula is a substantially non-smelling pale yellow oily substance. The compound of the formula as an active ingredient can be compounded with base materials for cosmetics or medicines and subsequently formulated into various types of pest repellents. The pest repellent is useful against pests e.g. millipedes, night crawlers, slugs and mosquitoes such as Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
