The invention discloses a drill bit that is assembled from aplurality of machined forgings that are welded together to forma unitary structure. Each forging comprises an upper bodyportion and a lower leg portion. The lower leg portion ismachined to form a shirttail section and a journal section, whichin turn is adapted to rotatively support a cone shaped cutter.In operation, the cutter is oriented to describe a circular path,the outer diameter of which forms the gage diameter of the bit.The upper body portion is machined to include a stabilizer lugextending radially outward to substantially the same diameter asthat formed by the cutters. The lower section of the lugcooperates with a recessed portion of the leg to form a flowpassage for enabling drilling fluid to more easily pass upwardthrough the borehole annulus during operation. A plurality ofpolycrystalline diamond inserts are mounted within the surface ofeach stabilizer lug.
