The present invention includes a silica network and, for example, polyhydroxyalkyl acrylate, which is entangled with the network by photopolymerizing tetraalkenyl orthosilicate with ultraviolet light and then converting it to a composite material by sol-gel treatment. It relates to a method for producing a composite material. The material obtained is optically transparent. In addition, this material can be deposited on a substrate in a relatively thick layer because of its very low shrinkage. The composite material is particularly well suited to the top coating 5 on the color filter layer 3 in the liquid crystal display because it adheres well to the ITO layer 7.
