The device simulates accident sequences which occur if a motor vehicle leaves a dry carriageway and plunges into water where it can rotate about its longitudinal and its transverse axes. The device comprises a basin filled with water and a portal crane situated above said basin. A vehicle cell is suspended on said portal crane. Said vehicle cell can be lowered into the basin and in the process can be rotated about various axes. Under the supervision of a trainer, subjects sitting in the vehicle cell can learn the correct action in the event of the motor vehicle plunging into water in this manner.
