The invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising, in combination, nanopigments of metal oxides chosen from titanium oxide, zinc oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide or mixtures thereof, with an average diameter of less than 100 nm, and an antioxidant chosen from polyphenols, except for the esters formed from gallic acid and aliphatic monoalcohols, in a cosmetically acceptable support, the composition not containing any product having a peroxidase activity which is capable of reducing organic peroxides. This composition may be used for protecting the human epidermis and the hair against ultraviolet rays or as a make-up product.
