An elongate flexible conduit (21) is attached to one end of a syringe whose piston is connected to a drive system. The conduit passes through a control sleeve (22) an terminates in a hypodermic needle (18). A blocking device such as a clamp (13) is attached to the sleeve to selectively close the conduit. The clamp is operated by a manual handle (17), and allows a build-up of pressure in the conduit to create a pressurised column of liquid. The piston of the syringe is driven by an electric motor or a gravity-controlled guide. The clamp includes a pair of jaws (14) engaging the conduit, such that manual pressure on the handle releases the jaws to allow fluid to flow to the needle.
