A process for biological treatment of waste water comprises: (a) first treating the waste water in a decanter to separate at least part of the suspended material in the water, followed by successive stages of (b) elimination of carbonaceous contamination, (c) nitrification and (d) denitrification carried out in at least one biological reactor with the introduction, after a delay and as necessary, of at least part of the suspended material separated in stage (a) into the denitrification stage (d).
