The present invention concerns compounds having the general formula I ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 denotes hydrogen or hydroxy,P PR. sup.2 denotes hydrogen or hydroxy,PPR.sup.3 denotes hydrogen or alkoxy,PPR.sup.4 denotes hydrogen, CO. sub.2 H, SO.sub.3 H, PO.sub.3 H.sub.2 or a salt of the corresponding acid, PPR.sup.5 denotes CO.sub.2 H, SO.sub.3 H, PO.sub.3 H.sub. 2 or a salt of the corresponding acid andPPR.sup.6 denotes alkoxy,PPtheir use for displacing iodothyronines from proteins binding them, as well as a method and reagent for the determination of iodothyronine in which such compounds are used.
