PURPOSE: To provide a nitriding method for forming a relatively thick nitride layer on the surface of an aluminum material and to furnish a nitriding assistant and in aluminum material having a relatively thick nitride layer. ;CONSTITUTION: A nitriding assistant consisting of a metal powder with at least one kind among titanium, chromium, silicon, iron, manganese, nickel, vanadium, tantalum, magnesium, boron and zirconium as the main component is brought into contact with the surface of an aluminum material to be nitrided, and, under such conditions, the aluminum material is heat-treated in gaseous nitrogen. Consequently, a nitride layer having ≥5μm thickness and 150-3000 Vickers hardness is obtained on the surface of the aluminum material in contact with the assistant. Since the obtained aluminum material has a thick and high- hardness nitride layer, the material is optimally used in an aluminum material needing wear resistance.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
