PURPOSE: To obtain an Al material with a relatively thick nitrided layer, provide a method for nitriding the Al material and obtain an auxiliary for the nitriding treatment of the Al material. ;CONSTITUTION: An auxiliary for the nitriding treatment made of Al powder is brought into contact with the surface of an Al material to be nitrided and the heat treatment is carried out in the presence of gaseous nitrogen to form a nitrided layer having ≥5μm thickness and Vickers hardness of 250-1,200 on the surface of the Al material kept in contact with the auxiliary. When both the Al powder as the auxiliary for the nitriding treatment and the Al material as a material to be treated are made of an Mg-contg. Al alloy, they are optimum for nitriding. Since the resulting nitrided layer of the Al material is thick and hard, the Al material is optimum for use as the Al material requiring the wear resistance.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
