A process and device are disclosed for regulating a converter-powered, permanently excited synchronous motor (2) whose motor current is regulated in the base speed range depending on a predetermined motor current set value (IMset), a detected motor current real value (IMreal) and detected position signals (LR,S,T). In the field-weakening range, the motor current is regulated depending on a converter input current set value (IGset) which may be predetermined by the load of the synchronous motor (2), on a calculated converter input current real value (IGreal) and on a calculated preliminary control angle ( phi ) determined depending on the proportion of an actuating variable real value (USt) which exceeds a maximum actuating variable (UStmax). A converter-powered, permanently excited synchronous motor (2) can thus be regulated absolutely smoothly between the base speed range and the field-weakening range, amd vice versa, under all load conditions.
