METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR COOLING ROLLING MILL ROLLS AND FLAT ROLLED PRODUCTS

One or more spray bars having a plurality of spraynozzles for cooling a rolling mill roll are provided with anapparatus to cause at least one spray bar to undergo atranslational, rotational, and/or pivotal movement sufficient tochange the spray-angle and/or spray-distance affected by nozzlesthereon to thereby control the cooling rate effected by the nozzlesso moved. The spray bar can be automatically controlled byproviding a means for monitoring the roll condition and/orworkpiece condition and means responsive thereto for moving thespray bar as necessary to change and adjust individual coolingrates effected by the nozzles and correct for any undesired resultso monitored. A unique spray bar has nozzles arranged in a curvedalignment so that each effects a different spray-angle and/orspray-distance. Like apparatus and comparable methods can beutilized to cool a hot rolled product.
