CUTTING APPARATUS FOR CUTTING A GEOMETRICAL-SHAPED OPENING THROUGH A FLAT-SURFACED MATERIAL

A cutting device is provided for cutting a geometrically-shaped openingthrougha flat-surfaced material e.g., a normally-unvented ostomy collection pouch,whichprovides access to the interior thereof. The cutting device includes aretainer which iscircularly-shaped and which is provided with a centrally-disposed aperture. Italsoincludes a cooperating member having an inside diameter coinciding with aninternaldiameter of an edge flange of a cooperating disc for cooperating with theexternaldiameter of the retainer with a portion of the material therearound and acentrally-disposed aperture. An elongated holding member is provided which isrotatably-disposedwithin that centrally-disposed aperture. The holding member has a cuttingdevice whichis disposed on one distal end of the cutting means. The cutting device ispreferablyprovided with a protruding tab or burr which is generally disposed in linewith thecircumference of that centrally-disposed aperture. A rotation member isprovided forrotating the cutting device. When the cutting device is rotated, the cuttingdevice cutsa geometrically-shaped opening through the material, substantially the size ofthecentrally-disposed aperture.
