Methods for killing foot-and-mouth disease virus in products derived from animals

A method for using CO2 to kill Foot-and-Mouth disease virus (FMDV) in animal products is provided. The method involves exposing the animal products to a viricidally effective amount of CO2 to kill the FMDV. The method may also be used to produce a FMD vaccine. A confirmation step may also be performed to assure that sufficient amounts of CO2 have been applied.
