The invention relates to an apparatus for cutting open the abdominal cavity of slaughtered poultry, with positioning means (5) for a bird, tensioning means (6) for tensioning the abdominal skin from the inside at the intended cutting location and a cutting apparatus (8) for making a transverse cut in the abdominal skin. Preferably the cutting apparatus consists of at least a knife (12) rotating around a substantially vertical axis (11) which knife is movable substantially synchronously with a respective bird and between its legs along some distance. For obtaining a proper cut each rotating knife may comprise a disc-shaped knife which by means of a planetary drive follows a circular track and which further rotates around its own centre.
