Prodn. of aromatic ketones of formula R-Ar-CO-R1 (I) comprises reaction of alkyl-substd. benzenes with a carboxylic anhydrides, acyl chlorides or free carboxylic acids at 50-250 degrees C in the acid form of a silicon-rich zeolite with pore size 5 Angstrom , with SiO2/MO2 ratio 5-200:1. R = 1-14C alkyl; Ar = phenyl or naphthyl; R1 = 1-6C alkyl; H = Al, B, Ga, In, Fe, Cr, V, As and/or Sb, in trivalent form.
