FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to determine axial moment of inertia of bodies as well as of inertia tensors on platforms rotating with considerable friction within restricted limits about axis placed in space at will. Platform is given two-stage quasi-symmetric substantially nonuniform accelerating-decelerating rotation directed from one limit of permissible angular zone to other one having acceleration stage with angular acceleration essentially unequal to zero sharply transferring into position of static equilibrium of system passing to deceleration stage with angular deceleration almost equal in modulus to proper values of angular acceleration. Instantaneous angular velocities of platform over terminal set of angular positions are measured. Torque accelerating-decelerating moment creating specified motion is changed within measurement intervals by known variable sign-alternating and other values. Measurement of instantaneous angular velocity by which axial moment of inertia of body is determined is repeated. Device for realization of method has platform with gripper which axis is arranged vertically or at will in space and is supported in immobile bearings, power mechanism presenting four-spring restoring mechanism carrying pair of springs compressed in advance by adjustable rest and contacting bar of coupling which work within all four angular measurement intervals of measurement zone and pair of springs working within limits of two extreme measurement intervals which are cut out during repeat test and tachometer.
