The cable reel has a carrier (4) around which the cable is wound, with the cable winding (6) provided with a binding incorporating a soln. which hardens to secure the individual windings together in fixed relative positions. The carrier is made of an open-pore porous material with the same or a slightly lower diffusion coefficient than the winding w.r.t. the soln.Pref. the optical cable winding is coated with an adhesive or lacquer layer, with the optical cable paid out form the reel in the axial direction. The carrier pref. has a porosity of between 70 and 97%.
