The interference pattern is created as a microscopic relief in a thin layer of transparent thermoplastic material (2). During creation of the image, the layer is attached to a temporary carrier (3) by a separation layer (4). The temporary carrier is made from paper or polyester film. The final substrate (12) is a sheet of paper, card or plastic onto which a thin upper cover of nickel foil (11) has been glued. The outer surface of the thermoplastic layer is "rolled" over the nickel foil surface, to which it adheres. As the temporary carrier moves away from the final substrate, the rear face of the thermoplastic material (2) separates from the separation layer (4).
